Windows 10 screen flickers – what to do?

Windows 10 screen flickers

Windows 10 screen flickers – many users face this problem. Alas, but the malfunction may appear, it would seem, without any reason. But, there are still some troubleshooting options.

A flickering screen often indicates a software problem. In Windows 10, problems with outdated programs or drivers often lead to display problems.

You can use the Task Manager to find out exactly what the problem is. But, this method does not always work. Therefore, let’s take a closer look at the reasons why the laptop or PC screen may flicker.

The Windows 10 monitor screen flickers

If the screen flickers in Windows 10, in most cases there are two possible solutions: the application is incompatible or the drivers are outdated. It is easy to find out which of the two problems is with the help of the Task Manager.

Open the Task Manager, for example, by pressing [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Del], and then clicking “Task Manager”. If the Task Manager does not flicker, the application used is incompatible. But, if the task manager is also flickering, then the drivers are outdated.

Windows 10 and incompatible program

In most cases, the program is no longer compatible with Windows if it is outdated. As a rule, the problem is solved by updating this application. For this purpose, the program often has an update function.

In addition, you can also visit the manufacturer’s website and download the latest version. According to Microsoft, three applications Norton Antivirus, iCloud and IDT Audio, in particular, lead to compatibility problems.

If the program is too old to be compatible with Windows 10, you can try this application in compatibility mode. To do this, right-click on the program and select “Troubleshooting compatibility issues”.

Now Windows OS will diagnose possible problems with you in parts. If this does not help, you should consider removing the corresponding program. Alas, this often applies to old games.

Windows 10 screen flickers on fast startup

In Windows 10, the screen can also flicker when activating Quick Start mode or hybrid Quick start mode. In this case, you should disable the mode and always turn off the computer completely.

Outdated drivers are also a common cause. Especially older graphics drivers are the most common screen flicker problem. It should be noted that sometimes flickering may appear only in some games.

Let’s look at the basic tips for solving the problem when the screen flickers in Windows 10:

  • Check the refresh rate of the screen. In some cases, the screen flicker may be due to the fact that the refresh rate of the screen does not match the settings of the video card. To fix this, right-click on an empty space on the desktop, select “Display Settings”, go to the “Display” tab and check the refresh rate settings.
  • Update the graphics card drivers. Outdated or incorrectly installed graphics card drivers may cause the screen to flicker. To update your graphics card drivers, go to your graphics card manufacturer’s website and download the latest driver version.
  • Turn off the dynamic brightness function. Some monitors have a dynamic brightness feature that automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen depending on the lighting around you. This function may cause the screen to flicker, so try disabling it in the monitor settings.
  • Change the power saving settings. If the power saving settings do not match your monitor, the screen may start to flicker. To change the power saving settings, go to the Control Panel, select “Power Settings” and adjust the power saving modes according to your monitor.
  • Check for viruses and malware. Malware can cause screen flickering and other computer problems. Check your system for viruses and malware using an antivirus program.

Hardware problem

If the solutions described above do not work, then you should check your equipment. In particular, are all the connectors on the computer connected correctly? Is the graphics card properly connected to the motherboard?

Check the display cables and replace them if necessary. A faulty HDMI or VGA cable can no longer transmit all data correctly. A faulty power cable can no longer supply the screen with constant power.

Flickering can also be caused by constantly turning the screen on and off. You should also try the screen on another computer or laptop. And also try connecting another monitor to your PC.

If your monitor continues to flicker on another PC, then there is a chance that the reason is the monitor itself. In this case, repairs will be required. If the warranty period has not expired, then you can contact the service center for repair or replacement.
